Just came across this sweet Roman Coliseo in Pula, on the Istrian peninsula of Croatia. This area of the country still has an Italian-speaking minority and the street signs are bilingual. The airport in Pula is so tiny it’s hilarious. Now to figure out the plan for the next 13 days until back to England to watch Ben in the Open Championship with Dad. Nice to be back on the Med with a high of 90 degrees and lots of sun than in rainy, 65 degree London. Just like Anducia! I don’t know how people can live there. I definitely know where I belong.

Interesting Article on Cadiz

Interesting Article on Cadiz

allthingseurope:

Budapest is home to the (Continental) Europe’s first metro system.
(London’s was first, but they ain’t they not really Europe)

Packing for Hungary and Being Stressed

Trying to do some laundry and have it be try so I can pack it tomorrow. Not having a clothes dyer, you have to plan more ahead than you´re used to. But, with this African heat wave (but really, how cool is it that our heat is coming up from the Sahara?) the clothes are drying fast. Unlike SC, it’s only like 14% humidity so when it’s 100 degrees, things evaporate nice and fast. I at least have my bus and plane tickets, so the most important part of the trip prep is done. Printing is hard around here. Not really, but it makes me miss Harper.

So I have known that I have to do a paper in Art History. I was going to do a project with a partner and do the Mezquita in Cordoba, but I think we might just do it solo as he gave us the go ahead for solo work. I really like the Palacio da Pena that we went to in Sinta in Portugal, but it’s sort of a Frankenstein architecturally speaking, and it would be hard to present and write a paper on given there is so much ground to cover. What to do?

But for extra help with our grade in Latin American History, we can present to the class, as well as teach them a lesson centered around the book we have to read and write a paper on. I’m in this weird position because not to brag, but I’m a teacher’s pet. Really. The poor professor can’t get anyone to participate, save this Brazilian girl and I. She knew my name on the second day. I participate and am cordial, something I can’t say for a group of French girls in our class. Anyway, I am just wanting to still do a good job to get enough points to help, but I’m also relying on my relationship with the professor to help push me toward good grades. We also have a final, but God knows what it will look like. I just need to pass, whatever that means, because honestly I don’t have any idea how grades work here. I think it’s a 10 point scale with like 6 passing - whatever it is, it’s not comparable to the US system, a system I’m starting to miss. This uncertainty and lack of expectations is too stressful.

I got the book that I told her I would read and left it at the copisteria. It’s like a kinkos that will make copies of library books - we don’t get library books for but a week, but this way, we don’t have to spend huge sums on text books. Def would like to import this idea to the States, except I would be arrested for copyright infringement. After doing some reading for Literature, I’m going to try and research for Budapest. When it rains it pours!

"Spain is one of the countries that has formed the world’s culture,

Lalalala another one, I can’t help!
IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL and I’m SOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!

So I wanted to go to Feria in Sevilla (which this picture was taken), as it’s world-renown and a huge cultural event. My plan was to go there between when the train got to Sevilla from Cadiz and from when our bus left for Portugal. But alas, it was raining and chilly and we didn’t have enough time to get there and back to make our bus.

Instead, in about an hour a few friends and I are taking the train to Jerez de la Frontera to take part in La Feria de los Caballos. Jerez’s feria is supposed to be actually better according to the few people I’ve talked to that have been to both because the Caseta, or the tents with food and revelry, aren’t super-exlcusive, nor it is as well known. For Gaditanos, it is the feria of choice as we don’t have our own feria. (There wouldn’t be room! But that’s why we do Carnaval so hard. Feria’s not our thing)

I’ll reblog a few other pictures, most likely from the Sevilla Feria because they’re easier to find. Jerez will look pretty much the same. You basically go, dress up, drink sherry, or rebujitos (a cocktail made with sherry), eat Spanish food, eat fair food, and ride on amusement rides. There are horse exhibitions and bull fights too. Basically, it’s like a classed up version of an American county fair.

More time off

So I got up late today, and sped-walked to literature. But when I got there, the class was empty. Today there was a student protest/strike, but I thought some people would go, maybe the professors. Nope! Not even our lit. prof was there, and she was there during the general strike. I guess all classes pretty much arent taking place. I walked through the march on my way home from campus, and recognized a few of the Spanish kids from class. I guess that means no school today?! This country is so funny. I feel like we never have class almost.

Marrakesh

Plan is to visit Essaouira after here, then take the night train up the spine of the country to Tangier, cruising across the straight to Tarifa, then bus back to Cadiz. Adventure time! Here’s to hoping my MSA actually helps. My fear is that my two+ years of MSA study will not be as useful as my passive knowledge of French. Will be interesting to see.

Budapest!

So I went for and booked a flight to Budapest for next weekend. (Not this weeked - weather is going to be great and I’m kicking it on the beach here in Cadiz) It’s a Ryanair flight from Madrid on Thr that gets back Mon night. I have to take a bus from Cadiz to Madrid, both night buses to save time and money. All in all, total RT cost from Cadiz - Budapest is like 165€! That’s actually really fantastic.

I will make a Lisbon post I just haven’t had time. Finally busy with school stuff. When it rains, it pours! I went to the beach all afternoon, and although I didn’t meet up with any friends, I was able to get a lot of reading done for my literature class. I can definitely feel like I have work to do, which is kind of nice actually. Then, the American crew all decided to meet for dinner at Foster’s, a chain of American restaurants like a fancy Applebee’s. I had a bacon cheeseburger, which was ok. It was way too pink, but at least we had free refills - that is unheard of here. I also split the appitizer platter with Javi which was realllllly good. Just wish the entree was better. Then we rushed to see Los Juegos de Hambre (The Hunger Games, but dubbed into Castellano) at the movie theatre. It was really good, and now I think I really will buy the books and read them. I’m torn whether I should read them in Spanish or the original English, but I think a written translation won’t be as bad as dubbing in regards to changing meaning etc. Then we left the theatre and the people in the group that wanted to go out before were too tired. I never was planning on hitting the town, but I suggested we go to a Tapas bar just to chill for a bit longer. We finally got our bearings and found El Albaicin, which is the first place I actually went to eat in Cadiz. It’s a little dive of a place, and like a good dive has cheap food, good drinks, and is open when other places aren’t. We all made plans to go the beach tomorrow as it’s supposed to be in the seventies at last. I thought Spain was hot, but I guess not until June. Cola just really makes you thin blooded from its constant heat. All in all, a very good and relaxing day.
